Alexandria resident Stephanie Lasure has joined the #EverySingleStreet movement and is in the process of running every single street in the City of Alexandria.
Run Washington reported that Lasure, who has run several ultramarathons, has clocked more than 240 miles in Alexandria in the past 19 weeks. She's not done yet. Alexandria covers a little more than 15 square miles and is one of the most densely-populated areas in Northern Virginia.
Lasure is using an old-fashioned paper map zoning map from City Hall.
“As runners, we always travel to go see a place. We want to pick a marathon where we haven’t been or want to go find another place to go run. Every time we go to a new city, the first thing we do is go run to get to know it,” she said, explaining why she took on the challenge, which she documents on Instagram @jlaswerve. “What a great way to just reconnect with your community and your neighborhood — and get to know where you live. It’s been a great way to connect with my home.”
Lasure got her inspiration from professional ultrarunner Rickey Gates, who set out to run every street in San Francisco in 2018, covering 1,300 miles in 47 days (an average of 27.7 miles per day, which is more than a marathon itself). His project inspired people around the globe to explore their cities and spawned #EverySingleStreet.
