Perched at the top of the boutique Hotel Heron, Good Fortune serves craft cocktails and shareable small plates from an open-air perch with sweeping views of Old Town's rooftops, the Potomac, National Harbor and even the D.C. monuments in the distance. Come for the sunset, when the golden light spills across the river; stay for the DJ sets and summer concert series. It runs seasonally in the warmer months, so catch it while you can.

Not a rooftop, but a top-floor perch with what may be the best framed waterfront views in the city. This modern American spot pairs wine and craft cocktails with wide windows over the river up in Old Town North — a polished, slightly-removed alternative to the waterfront crowds.

For a view you can't get any lower to: a floating bar moored right on the Potomac at the base of the waterfront, near the Tall Ship Providence. Casual, seasonal, and about as close to the water as a cocktail can get.
Worth the drive

Just south of the city on a bluff above the Potomac, this historic, recently revived New American spot trades the Old Town bustle for a quieter, more scenic river view. A pretty drive down the parkway and a lovely setting for an unhurried sunset dinner near Mount Vernon.

Time your visit for golden hour — the west-facing Potomac lights up beautifully as the sun drops. These open-air spots are weather- and season-dependent and the rooftop keeps limited days, so check current hours before you go, and consider a reservation for prime sunset seating on a warm weekend. Then find your perch, order something cold, and watch the river turn to gold while the good weather holds.
