Alexandria Living recently enjoyed getting reacquainted with the newly reopened Morrison House, a boutique hotel and Autograph Collection Marriott property that’s tucked away in Old Town Alexandria, at 116 S. Alfred St.
During our "staycation," we enjoyed the new and refreshingly unique menu at their cozy bar and restaurant. Chef Tomas Chavarria, the executive chef, leads The Study restaurant and bar at Morrison House in addition to King & Rye at The Alexandrian, the sister Marriott property just a few blocks away on King Street.
While in the heart of Old Town, The Study feels like a destination in itself and is a great spot for locals looking to experience happy hour or a quiet dinner in a sophisticated space.
With all of the accoutrements of a classic lounge complete with live piano in the
evenings, the pageantry of the dining experience begins at the bar with an eclectic menu from bartender Emmanuel Pressley that's full of bright flavors, unique pairings and dramatic garnishes that get plenty of oohs and ahhs from guests. We lucked out being there on a Thursday night, when pianist Dehrric Richburg delights with concert worthy performances. He's a star as is each cocktail that's fun and wildly creative, far beyond a good Old Fashioned or Dirty Martini.
True to its name, each cocktail is influenced by a famous work of literature and the surrounding decor includes stacks of classic reads from authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald and elegant high back chairs perfect for reading and sipping. Whether you’re coming for happy hour or staying for the weekend, the bar’s atmosphere paired with bartender Manny’s menu, transports guests just as well as a good novel. The Lucid Dreams cocktail is a standout. With flavors of beets and chocolate, it perfectly represents the balance of comforting indulgence that Morrison House is known for and a reputation for forward-thinking creativity that’s sure to come.
The dinner menu is just as imaginative. Chef Tomas’s passion for his craft, Costa Rican roots and appreciation for regionally sourced ingredients shine through each dish.
When he’s not in the kitchen, Chef Tomas spends his time visiting local farmers and vendors who he’s built up relationships with over the years and strives to pair their best products with his imaginative vision for each dish.
We enjoyed the Steak & Onions entree, which features an aged strip loin from Seven Hills Food in Lynchburg, Va. and The Study Chocolate Sampler for dessert, which feels like a tour through Mesoamerican chocolate flavors. It’s elevated, delicate and satisfies any craving for a “What do you have that’s chocolate?” moment.
The Study marries the friendly and intimate atmosphere of a bed and breakfast with a level of luxury and expert hospitality that one would expect from a four-star hotel. It’s perfect for travelers looking for a taste of the old and the new in Alexandria and even better for locals looking for a hidden gem.
