Alexandria chef Chris Edwards, of the recently-opened Hank & Mitzi’s Italian Kitchen, won the grand prize on Food Network’s Chopped episode “Want a Gnocchi Sandwich” that ran Tuesday night, Sept. 29.
The cooking show has four chefs compete against each other for a chance to win $10,000, using one secret ingredient. The winner takes home $10,000 along with newfound fame.
“Nothing can really prepare you,” said Chef Chris. “The whole experience was very intense and the sheer pressure of competing at this level really caught me off guard. The first time that clock started ticking… it was such a surreal moment: My instincts and love of cooking just took over and was left hoping my dish would turn out for the best!”
In celebration of Chef Chris’s win, Hank & Mitzi’s, at 600 Montgomery St., launched a new lunch menu Wednesday featuring one of Chef Chris’s mystery basket items from the entrée round of Chopped.
The Gnocchi Sandwich features potato gnocchi stuffed bread with mozzarella and cotto ham and is served with Vincenzo sauce.

Unfortunately for our highly politically-connected region, the show airs at the same time as the first presidential debate between candidate Joe Biden and President Donald Trump. So, be sure to set your DVR for Chopped or the debate so you can watch the other live!
Chopped is hosted by Ted Allen, who was the food and wine specialist on the series Queer Eye.
