The new Silver Diner restaurant is opening Wednesday, Aug. 12 in Alexandria's West End.
The sneak peek preview last week did not disappoint.
The restaurant, with its iconic "Silver Diner" sign, anchors West Alex at the corner of King and N. Beauregard streets. Free parking is available under the future Harris Teeter store
We sampled some must-try items from the menu, including the Crispy Fried Brussels Sprouts, which includes dried apricots, cranberries and pecans, from the appetizer menu.
Other tasty items include the Baja Fish Tacos (made with Nordic flounder) and the Kickin' Short Rib Burger (made with Creekstone beef, nitrate-free bacon, cheddar, jalapeños, onion straws, southwest ranch and BBQ).
The Smith Island Cake, Maryland's official dessert, was a sweet ending to the evening, served with piping hot coffee in generously sized mugs.
The spacious restaurant features a fun, upbeat vibe, with friendly waiters and waitresses, classic Baby Boomer tunes (The Hollies, Van Morrison, The Cars) playing in the background and an awesome menu with something for everyone — from indulgent and decadent (a variety of milkshakes) to tasty and healthy (hummus Greek salad and cauliflower pita bowl, for example).
Happy hour appetizers priced from $5 to $7 are available weekdays from 3-7 p.m., including Crispy Fried Brussel Sprouts, Cheese Fries, Avoc
ado Toast, Buffalo Wings, Fried Chicken Sliders and Beyond Meat Meatball Sliders. Happy hour drinks are priced from $4 craft beers to $6 red and white wines to $7 craft cocktails (margaritas, sangria, mojitos and more).
Starting Aug. 19, every Wednesday is Pups on the Patio, from 4-6:30 p.m., when food and drink specials will be available while supporting local animal charities on the dog-friendly patio. Pup treats will be available from Dairy Godmother in Del Ray.
Hours are: Sunday-Thursday:7 a.m. to midnight; Friday-Saturday: 7 a.m. - 2 a.m.
