Burger chain Shake Shack may open a restaurant on King Street.
The restaurant has applied for a special use permit to open in a space currently under construction in the 600 block of King Street.
Shake Shack focuses on milkshakes and burgers, with some chicken sandwich options on its menu.
The first Shake Shack started as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in New York City in 2004. The project was meant to just raise funds for a public art project. Now, it's a national chain with more than 250 locations in the United States and more worldwide.
East Shake Shack location partners with local artists and hosts fundraisers with local non-profit partners.
The 600 block of King Street had multiple empty storefronts for several years. This year, redevelopment started on a former Walgreens and a former bank at 615 to 621 King St., with street-level retail and residences above.
