Captain Gregory’s, an Alexandria cocktail staple, is preparing to welcome a new neighbor next door. RailBird Kitchen & Cocktails will celebrate its grand opening this week with a unique menu that fills a void in the North Old Town dining scene.
RailBird Kitchen & Cocktails, located at 804 N. Henry St., will be set in the old space occupied by Elizabeth's Counter, which has been stripped down and renovated over the past months to feature a long sweeping bar accented with a flowing quartz countertop throughout the space for guests to cozy up to.
Once settled in, guests will find a menu that starts out with “snacks and smalls” featuring unique must-haves like the cabbage pancake (a okonomiyaki-inspired vegan savory pancake, topped with daikon and kabayaki) as well as the usual suspects such as Brussels sprouts (with pine nuts, raisins, shoyu-lemon vinaigrette, ricotta salata).
The main stars of the menu are chicken sandwiches, available vegan, with toppings that range from Bahn Mi inspiration to a sweet-and-spicy combo of maple and gochujang. Chef Rob Micciulla explains: “I've built this small cohesive menu with flavors that are universally beloved and ingredients I’ve come across during my time cooking around the globe.”
The cocktail program, helmed by Brandon McDermott of Captain Gregory’s, will feature a collection of cocktails that bring the concept together. “The offerings are meant to be casual, yet sophisticated and introduce guests to some new ingredients with familiar, comforting flavors,” he said. Keep an eye out for a refreshing hibiscus-packed gin cocktail, topped with a young coconut-taro root foam and savory standouts such as a stirred, spirit-forward cocktail featuring the likes of truffle-washed cognac with notes of cinnamon and honey.
Wrap up the evening with donuts, a holdover from the Elizabeth's Counter days, but with an updated sophistication. Currently on the menu is a miso-caramel version and a yuzu poppy seed donut to finish the night.
Railbird Kitchen & Cocktails is located at 804 N Henry St, Alexandria, VA 22314. Hours are 4-9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 4-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday with happy hour running every day 4-6 p.m. Happy hour includes a curated menu of $10 cocktails, small plates and $5 beers.
