Beloved Alexandria restaurant Pines of Florence has closed to make room for new construction on King Street.
A new retail and residential development is coming to the 1300 block of King Street, forcing Pines of Florence to move.
A sign on the door indicated that it's not a permanent goodbye — the restaurant hopes to open again in the future. The sign thanked patrons for their loyalty and directed diners to Rosemarino D’Italia in Del Ray.
Aftertime Comics, which was next door at 1304 King Street, closed May 1. In a Facebook post, the owner wrote, "Yesterday was our last day at 1304 King St. It was a sad day because it has been Aftertime Comics home for over 30 years. However, we look forward to a new, larger store once this Pandemic is under control. Hope to see everyone again real soon."
The Holladay Corp. and The Foundry Cos. created the plans for 1300 and 1310 King Street (at the intersection of King and South Payne streets). It will include at least 30 residential units above retail on the ground floor. The plans call for the original building at 1300 King Street to remain and be integrated with a new adjacent building.
“We have been looking at Old Town, Alexandria for some time and when we saw the chance to work on an urban infill development, within walking distance to the Metro and the waterfront, we knew that it was an excellent opportunity for ourselves and for our partners,” Christian Cronin, Managing Partner with The Foundry Cos., said in a press release last year.
