The Wendy's at 6636 Richmond Hwy. at the Beacon Center was supposed to host its grand opening celebration this past Saturday, but... it didn't.
Dozens of Wendy's fans stood outside the brand new restaurant Saturday morning, but an apparent permit snafu or miscommunication delayed the opening.
The restaurant had opened just briefly on March 28 and 29, before closing again on March 30. A Facebook post on a community page on March 30 said: "Due to Some Technical Issues.Wendy’s 6636 Richmond Hwy Alexandria 22306 is Closed for Few Days. We will inform you As soon We open up again. Sorry for inconvenience."
The Saturday, April 15 grand opening was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and the first 100 people in line were to have received free food every week for a year. Residents showed up, but store employees reportedly did not.
Fairfax County's permit system shows that the restaurant passed its final inspection on Friday, April 14.
Wendy's has not yet provided a new date for its grand opening.
Signs at the restaurant on Monday morning pointed diners to the 8700 Richmond Hwy. location.
The restaurant is marked as temporarily closed on Google Maps. There are two reviews on Google — 5 stars from a person who rated the restaurant before it opened, and 1 star from a person who was there Saturday.
"I don’t understand how someone gave it 5 stars. It hasn’t even opened yet. In fact, Wendy’s was a no-show to their own grand opening on Saturday 4/15. Needless to say, there was no grand opening or explanation given to the public," that reviewer wrote.
There are close to 6,000 Wendy's fast food restaurants nationwide, including more than 220 in Virginia.
