A new restaurant, Oak Steakhouse, is coming to the Gables Old Town/EDEN development at 530 First St. in Old Town North.
Here are some details included in paperwork filed with the City:
- The restaurant will seat 146 people.
- The owners are Stephen Palmer of Charleston, S.C., Andrew O'Keefe of Madison, N.J. and Michael Meyer of New York.
- The restaurant is being designed by Studio 3877, a boutique design firm in DC.
There are currently Oak Steakhouse locations in Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, Nashville and next year in Raleigh. Each Oak Steakhouse has its own locally sourced menu and seasonal offerings, as well as American-inspired “Oak Specialties” such as the Oak burger, roasted local chicken, crab cakes, short ribs and more.
The new steakhouse and West Elm, a home decor and furniture store, will anchor the ground floor for the Gables Old Town North apartment homes.
The developer, EDENS, hired architects Hord Coplan Macht, which has an office in Alexandria, to design the apartment project. Groundbreaking took place last year.

The mixed-use development in Alexandria will be anchored at the street level by more 50,000 square feet of retail, a public plaza and green space.
"Our team’s first challenge was to create a contemporary building that still conformed to the city’s historic style," the architecture firm noted. They decided on a design that "seeks to respect the past mercantile history of the neighborhood while looking ahead to the future with its modern amenities and details."
The six-story building will feature 232 apartment units and 481 parking spaces.
Here's a look at the building's amenities:
- Swimming pool with cabanas
- Outdoor kitchen with grills
- Roof deck with views of the Potomac River
- Central lawn for yoga
- Outdoor "serenity nook"
- Fire pit and outdoor lounge with pergola
- Outdoor game area
- Community lounge
Apartment amenities will also include a fitness center, business center, theater and bike repair station.
The building will include two full levels of underground parking, townhouse style walk-up units at the street level, and a combination of four and five upper levels of wood frame construction. The amenities continue above for the residents including three distinct podium level courtyards and rooftop deck with views of the Potomac River. Gables Old Town North is in the process of being LEED certified.
The building will include 17 studio apartments, 145 one-bedroom/one bath apartments and 70 two-bedroom/two-bath apartments. The building is less than a mile from the Braddock Road Metro station.
