Mount Purrnon, Alexandria’s first cat café, is a few steps closer to opening.
Construction is underway at 109 S. Alfred St. in Old Town, and the City Council approxed a special use permit for the establishment on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The opening of the cat café could be as soon as early May, according to the owners, but that will depend on construction running smoothly and passing all final inspections.
“Mount Purrnon Cat Café + Wine Bar will be a space where you can make yourself comfortable and have fun, while helping adoptable cats! Wine and beer will be available, as well as café items and snacks,” according to the café’s website.
Mount Purrnon started with a Kickstarter fundraising campaign that drew $25,500 from 209 donors.
The cat lounge will be separated from the dining area. In addition to the lounge area, where people can pet and play with adoptable cats from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, Mount Purrnon will have snacks, tables, free wifi and an option to telework.
Cat lovers will be able to pay an hourly fee to play with the cats — that money will fund their care until they are adopted. Mount Purrnon will be providing food, litter and care for the cats 24/7. There will be a separate entrance to the café area for those who are allergic to cats.
The cat café also plans movie nights, trivia nights and yoga, among other events.
