Situated in the heart of Old Town on King Street, Mackie's Bar & Grill closed its doors for the last time Tuesday night (Aug. 30) after eight years in business.
The eatery, which opened its doors Oct. 10, 2014 at 907 King St., announced its closing on social media, stating: "Thank you to all who have loved and laughed with us. We are closing for the last time tonight."
The neighborhood restaurant and bar was a hang-out for locals, visitors and football fans, especially for those looking to cheer on the Green Bay Packers on the eatery's 100-inch screen.
It was known for its steaks, dry-aged burgers and wings, even winning over a Buffalo, N.Y. chicken wing fan in an unscientific comparison by Alexandria Living Magazine in September 2020:
"The highest of compliments, our Buffalo native said Mackie’s came the closest to real wings from Buffalo. We ordered both the classic Buffalo wings and the jerk chicken wings. Our testers said both options were meaty, cooked perfectly and ''flavorful,' though some of our tasters thought the jerk wings were just a tad on the salty side."
The restaurant, owned by former attorney Sang Lee and named for his wife, weathered
the closing of the metro for a time in 2019. It's location was about a half-mile from the King Street Metrorail Station.
Located in a popular spot at 907 King St., sandwiched between The Majestic and White House Black Market. Lee told ALXnow he was unable to negotiate a new lease and that the building's owners may be in talks with a salon about opening in the spot.
Mackie's earned four out of five stars in nearly 500 reviews on Yelp.
