King Arthur Baking is bringing its first combined retail store and baking school outside Vermont to 617 King St. in Old Town Alexandria. We asked the company what Alexandria bakers can expect.
Q&A: King Arthur Baking
Why Old Town Alexandria, and why 617 King St. specifically, for your first permanent store and baking school? We'd love to know what drew you here.
We’ve had so much fun getting to know the local community that has joined us at our Fairfax and Bethesda pop-up locations, and we’re so excited to be opening a permanent home for bakers in the DMV. Alexandria already has a deep community of home bakers, and we can’t wait to meet more of them at our new Old Town location.
Getting to build an in-person community bonded over a shared love of baking is such a special experience, and King Street just felt like the perfect fit. From the neighborhood’s rich history and cozy charm to its impressive lineup of independent businesses and food culture, we knew we’d be in great company. Our stores are for everyone – from the baking pros to those newer to the kitchen – and we’re counting down the days until we open our doors to the Old Town community.
What will people find when they walk in — baking supplies, fresh-baked goods, packaged mixes, a café? Paint us a picture of the space.
Anyone who joins us at our new Old Town location can expect a curated selection of baking essentials, tools, ingredients, bakeware and kitchen equipment designed to help bakers of all skill levels succeed. From specialty flours, sourdough starters, and cake and cookie mixes to muffin tins, pie pans, bench knives, baking stones and more, we’ll have a wide variety of products to inspire and support every kind of baker.
The store will also be a great one-stop shop to pick up holiday gift sets and kits for the bakers in your life. To explore the types of products we currently offer, visit: https://www.kingarthurbaking.com
From the back of the store, shoppers will also be able to peek into the baking school!
What will the baking school offer at launch — the kinds of classes, the price range and how folks can sign up?
The Old Town store will feature a dedicated baking school and event space, allowing us to host a wide range of hands-on classes, as well as kids' birthday parties, private events and community gatherings.
This will be King Arthur's first combined retail store and baking school outside of Vermont. Led by King Arthur's expert instructors, the baking school will offer hands-on classes for bakers of all skill levels—from beginners looking to build confidence to experienced bakers eager to refine their techniques.
Programming will include a variety of hands-on classes covering everything from bread baking and pastry to seasonal favorites and specialty skills. Additional class details and registration information will be announced closer to opening.
How many people are you hiring locally, and are there still roles open?
Yes, we are hiring locally! Open positions can be found on our website: https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/careers
Do you have a firm opening date yet, and will there be a grand opening or ribbon-cutting the public can join?
We don’t have a confirmed opening date locked in just yet, but we’re hoping to open our doors in time for the holiday baking season. We’ll definitely be inviting the community to join us in celebrating our opening and will share more details on what those celebrations will look like in the next few weeks! We’ve had dozens of excited community members line up for our Bethesda and Fairfax pop-up openings, so we can’t wait to see that same excitement in Old Town.
