Jersey Mike's is expanding in Alexandria with a possible new location coming to the Alexandria Commons Shopping Center on Duke Street.
The sandwich shop is requesting bids to renovate the former Sweet Frog at 3219 Duke Street, which closed in 2021.
Jersey Mike's has locations at 360 S. Pickett St. in the West End Village shopping center, and at 7732 Richmond Highway in Mount Vernon Plaza in the Hybla Valley neighborhood.
Jersey Mike's started in the 1950s as Mike's Subs in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, a Jersey shore town. In 1971, a 17-year-old employee bought the shop as Mike retired. That employee, Peter Cancro, is now CEO and has overseen the expansion of what is now Jersey Mike's to approximately 2,000 locations.
This Wednesday, March 30, Jersey Mike's will donate all sale proceeds to the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games.
The Alexandria Commons Shopping Center is becoming a hot spot for new restaurants. In the past few years, The Halal Guys and Glory Days Grill opened, and two more restaurants are on the way in addition to Jersey Mike's — Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana and Hangry Joe's Hot Chicken.
