Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats was named one of the 40 best ice cream shops in the entire United States.
"These ice cream shops represent everything that is well and good: new-wave artisan shops challenging the very notion of what should be placed on a cone (or stick, or between cookies)," Thrillist noted in its introduction to the list.
Goodie's started as a frozen custard truck self-described as “Washington D.C.’s first and only ‘Vintage Mobile Eatery’ paying homage to the Rock & Roll era.” Under the leadership of Brandon Byrd, the truck became one of the region's most popular with a dedicated following. The truck roves around the DC region and is available for hire for events.
In 2021, Byrd opened a permanent location for Goodies in a very appropriate spot: The Ice House in Alexandria. The building at 200 Commerce Street in Old Town was originally the property of Mutual Ice Co., Alexandria's largest ice distributor. At just 300 sq. ft. inside, the building stored ice during a time before home refrigeration was widely available.
"The shop will sell you its rich custard on its own in a dish or on a cone, but Goodies is best known for its over-the-top sundaes. The “donutwich” is just what it sounds like: A scoop of vanilla bean custard sandwiched between two donuts of your choosing, and the shop offers other sundaes, shakes, and floats as well," Thrillist reported.
Goodies at The Ice House is open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. (or until the custard runs out). Learn more at mmmgoodies.com.
