Guests gather at the newly opened Good Fortune rooftop bar atop Hotel Heron on Friday evening.
A golden light filtered through the cloudy skies Friday, April 25, as patrons gathered on the rooftop of Hotel Heron to welcome the opening of Good Fortune, Old Town Alexandria’s newest bar.
From its location above Prince Street, the rooftop offers views of Old Town’s rooftops, tree-lined streets and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Guests are met with striped umbrellas, lounge seating and a menu of playful cocktails and bites designed for easy sharing.
The layout mixes high-top bar seating with cushioned nooks and plant-lined walkways, making it feel like a breezy garden lounge above the city. Guests mingled under string lights while a live DJ spun upbeat tracks — adding to the casual, celebratory vibe of opening night.
The drink menu includes signature sips like the You-Zu-You, made with vodka, melon yuzu and cucumber soda, and The Tailfeather, a ginger-forward cocktail with whiskey and bitters.
For those opting out of alcohol, the bar offers options including The Angry Bird, a zero-proof margarita made with spiced tequila and grapefruit. Guests can also sip on Run Wild, a non-alcoholic IPA from Athletic Brewing Co., which delivers crisp flavors without the buzz.
For wine and beer drinkers, offerings range from prosecco and rosé to local favorites like Port City’s IPA and Honor’s classic lager.
Food is served in shareable portions and styled for rooftop snacking. A standout was the sheet tray of sliders — complete with smash patties, everything mayo, cheddar and lettuce — which offered a satisfying, savory bite. Other options included mini crab rolls with Old Bay and crispy shallots, house chips, and pimento cheese dip.
One server pointed out the Cuban sandwich tray as their personal favorite, featuring pulled pork, ham, Swiss and mustard served on toasted pressed bread.
The opening also featured a tattoo pop-up offering flash art for guests, a detail that added a bit of edge to the existing laid-back scene. Throughout the night, groups gathered around the circular fire pits and low tables, raising glasses to the newest member of Alexandria’s rooftop circuit.
Good Fortune is now open Monday through Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m., and Friday to Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. The bar is located at the top of Hotel Heron, 699 Prince St. For more information or reservations, visit https://heronalexandria.com/dine/good-fortune/.
