It’s been a minute since Old Town has had a full bakery. Bittersweet Catering closed its bakery at 823 King St. back in 2016 (although it still operates a catering business out of 103 ½ N. Alfred St.) and chain bakery, Le Pain Quotidien, closed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fresh Baguette bakery will be opening its fourth location — and first in Alexandria — at 1101 King St. in early 2022. The French bakery has stores in Bethesda, Rockville and Georgetown.
The bakery specializes in organic, fresh baguettes that are baked daily, as well as other specialty breads, croissants and pastries.
According to the Fresh Baguette website, their baked goods are painstakingly made. Baguettes are made using “a cold-dough process that produces unique flavors, homemade 'levain' (leaven), and made using state-of-the-art equipment imported from France. The end result is a baguette that is authentic with moisture and just the right crunch. In addition, it takes two days, 11 steps, carefully selected ingredients, and the skill of a pastry chef to make our soft and flaky, mouthwateringly tender croissant.”
Fresh Baguette also sells gourmet sandwiches, quiche, and coffee, espresso and bottled beverages.
An opening date has not been announced.
