French for “little estate,” Petit Domaine is a boutique sparkling winery and estate in Loudoun County. The first of its kind in Virginia, the wine is a Champagne collaboration exclusively focused on making world-class sparkling wine with Virginia grapes.
The winery has just opened (it held a ribbon-cutting last week) and is located at 37938 Charles Town Pike in Hillsboro, about an hour and 45-minute drive from Alexandria. Petit Domaine does not allow pets or anyone younger than 21.
The sparkling winery will offer three options, a Brut which will be the flagship wine, a Blanc de Blancs made with 100% chardonnay grapes, and a Rosé. The winery will pour a private label product from a region within Champagne, France, until their own grapes are ready. It will serve a limited-production portfolio by head winemaker Shai Van Gelder.
Expect some luxurious events held at the estate, if you become a wine club member. On Nov. 6, Petit Domaine is promising a Ferrari test drive.
Tasting room hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Walk-ins are welcome but reservations are recommended to reserve specific seating.
“A sparkling winery brings a different energy to the wine experience,” said J Snyder, a Loudoun native and founder of Petit Domaine, in a press release. “We are specialists in the wine, but we’re also a place for celebration and an elevated hospitality and lifestyle experience. Our goal is to add that dimension to the region’s already remarkable wine landscape.”
The winery grows and sources premium Virginia fruit and partners with top growers to craft elegant, expressive wines that reflect the state's rising profile. Under the culinary direction of Michelin-starred Chef Eric Ziebold, Petit Domaine's food program is designed to complement its sparkling offerings and enhance the guest experience.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to be involved with a winery that is as purposeful and intentional about their food program as they are about their sparkling wine," Ziebold said.
Ziebold also oversees Kinship and Métier in Washington, D.C. The restaurant also ranked #12 on Washingtonian's list of the city's 100 best restaurants.
