Rendering of outdoor dining at Chadwicks, recently approved by City Council.
The Alexandria City Council has approved Chadwicks plan for a new outdoor dining area, which the restaurant is hoping to open later this summer.
The outdoor seating for 70 seats will be located at the front of the restaurant, at 203 Strand St., and on the side, partially in Gilpin Alley.
The restaurant owners plan to locate two outdoor seats in the area directly in front of the restaurant, Gilpin Alley (48 seats), and a balcony to be constructed over Gilpin Alley (20 seats). Chadwicks plans to include outdoor speakers to provide background music in the outdoor dining areas. Music from the speakers will be played at low decibel levels which comply with the City’s noise ordinance. Staff has reinforced the accessory and background nature of the music and has permitted it during the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m, Sunday to Thursday and until 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
City staff supported the applicant’s request for additional outdoor seating, noting that it will complement the existing uses along Strand Street and are consistent with approved dining areas such as those offered at nearby restaurants like the Old Dominion Boat Club, The Hummingbird, and Virtue Feed and Grain. Further, this proposal is in line with recommendations found in the waterfront small area plan, which calls for more waterfront activation and outdoor dining along Strand Street.
Chadwicks has been a local favorite since 1967 and in its current location since 1979.
