The cat café Mount Purrnon is getting closer to opening and plans to be operating this summer.
The cat café, where people can work, eat and drink, plus pet and adopt cats, will be at 109 S. Alfred Street.
The opening is planned for the spring of 2020, but like every business, coronavirus changed those plans.
Founders Kristin Cowan and Adam Patterson wrote in an email to supporters, "Construction at Mount Purrnon is currently ongoing and it's starting to look great. The work crew is small (but very talented) and all available health precautions are being taken. Once we open, we will be deploying all the standard preventative health measures being taken by other businesses currently re-opening, and we will adjust to whatever health officials recommend at that point as well. The health of our guests, our staff, and the cats are priority #1."
The effort to bring a cat café to Alexandria started more than a year ago with a successful Kickstarter crowd funding campaign. Cowan and Patterson told supporters that opening a business as complex as a cat café would take a while, but then the arrival of COVID-19 made things even more complex.
"As terrible and bizarre as this year has been so far, we hope Mount Purrnon will bring some joy to Alexandria and the greater DMV for the second half of the year and beyond. Stay safe, stay healthy, and we look forward to seeing you soon over a few meow-mosas," the founders wrote.
