Washington Business Journal reported that the former Shoppers at Potomac Yard could become an Amazon grocery store.
"Keeping with its efforts to maintain a low profile, Amazon’s name does not appear on the documents for the grocery store planned for all or part of the roughly 50,000-square-foot space. But Toronto-based project architect NORR wrote in the filing that the drawings are for “Mendel,” the code name for Amazon's grocery endeavors that we cracked months ago," the publication reported.
The Shoppers grocery store in Potomac Yard closed in early 2020, as part of a larger reorganization of the company.
Next door to the would-be Amazon Fresh store in Potomac Yard, Total Wine is planning to open in the shuttered Pier One space. (There is a Total Wine in the Lincolnia area in Fairfax County.)
This is not Amazon's only grocery store in the Alexandria area. An Amazon Go store is opening at Manchester Lakes near Franconia (reportedly opening Memorial Day weekend), and another is opening in the Bailey's Crossroads area.
The entire Potomac Yard shopping center area is slated for massive redevelopment in the coming years, which has already started, for Virginia Tech's $1 billion Innovation Campus. Stores that are in place will likely be worked into the redevelopment.
