May brings warmer weather, graduations and apparently, lots of margaritas. Cinco De Mayo, contrary to the belief that it is Mexico’s version of the Fourth of July, celebrates the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, as well as a celebration of Mexican heritage.
With things looking up compared to this time last year, there are many restaurants where guests can celebrate Cinco De Mayo.
It wouldn’t be a holiday without tequila…or a margarita in this case. “The Virtue Margarita,” Hornitos Plata Tequila, Lime Juice, Triple Sec, Agave, Habanero Bitters, at Virtue Feed and Grain and Don Taco’s “Pineapple Chili Margarita,” Pineapple and Chile de Arbol infused Hornitos Plata Tequila, Lime Juice and Agave Nectar, are just a few examples of places that are “shaking” things up with their special margaritas.
Captain Gregory’s is offering their “Spring Break” cocktail series highlighting the complexity of tequilas, as well as some rum drinks. They are also featuring a Del Maguey Mezcal Tasting, selected beers, and small plates like Sweet Plantains and Shishito Peppers.
One of the best items on the menu to pair with tequila is tacos. Tequila & Taco is doing a countdown to Cinco de Mayo starting May 2 with $4 Micheladas and $12 T&T Bloody Marys. On May 3, guests get free queso with every order; May 4, $4 frozen margaritas are available; and May 5, Tequila & Taco will be open early, at 9 a.m., to begin celebrating.
Chop Shop Taco is doing things a little different this year, where they are allowing patio and indoor dining by reservation only. If you want tacos to go for Cinco de Mayo, guests must preorder by May 4 at 8 p.m. They will also be featuring their notorious Gasolina Margarita with house-made Cointreau and freshly squeezed limes.
For something truly interesting, The Energy Club in Shirlington is launching Cinco de MaYOGA, an outdoor yoga practice featuring DJ Thunder Bunny and a margarita afterward.
Enjoy!
