For people who have celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, finding restaurants with good gluten-free options can be a challenge.
But Alexandria is actually one of the best places in the country to look, according to a new study.
LawnStarter compared nearly 200 of the biggest U.S. cities to rank the Best Cities for Gluten-Free Food. (May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month.)
Here's how Alexandria ranked:
- Establishments Serving Gluten-Free Food per Square Mile - 3rd
- Total Number of Reviews for Establishments Serving Gluten-Free Food - 51st
- Average Monthly Google Search Volume for Gluten-Free-Related Terms Over Past 12 Months - 78th
- Allergy Specialists per 100,000 Residents - 47th
- Number of Gluten Intolerance Support Groups - 26th
LawnStarter looked for cities with highly rated gluten-free dining options, strong local demand and a supportive community. Bonus points were awarded for easy access to allergy specialists.
Washington, D.C. ranked 5th in the nation. The no. 1 city is New York. (See the complete rankings here.)
