Market Square 300 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22305
Thursday night, Alexandria residents are invited to a candlelight vigil and walk in memory of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away Friday after a battle with cancer.
The memorial will start at Market Square outside Alexandria City Hall with a moment of silence and speakers who will focus on Justice Ginsburg’s accomplishments, leadership and more.
“Ruth Bader Ginsberg was a champion who lived her life in pursuit of gender equality and justice, often taking the unconventional path to success. Her moniker, the Notorious RBG, is well deserved and I wanted to find a way for our community to come together to honor her legacy”, said Kelly Grant, Partner of ALX Community and one of the event organizers.
You can RSVP for the event here.
Justice Ginsberg was the second woman ever to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. She started her service on the Supreme Court bench in 1993 following a storied career in academia and as a prosecutor. She is best known for her opinions in cases focused on women's rights, gender equality and privacy.
The memorial gathering at Market Square will start at 7 p.m. It be followed by a procession down King Street to Waterfront Park.
Attendees are asked to wear masks to protect against coronavirus, and to also wear a black robe and lace collar, if you have those.
