Saturday, August 10, Artist Talk at 5:00pm following by Opening Reception from 6:00-9:00About the showAccording to figures from the United Nations, “the world’s population is expected to increase by two billion persons in the next 30 years…and could peak at nearly 11 billion around 2100.” As the human footprint expands across the planet, what will happen to the world that supports us? How will cities develop to cope with a growing population? Can we stay connected to the environment around us without destroying it?In this exhibition, Johab Silva examines the role of political powers, communities and individuals in balancing the needs of people and nature. His viewpoint is clear: we will be judged on the outcome. As artists, we need to ask how our personal responsibility manifests itself in our creative vision.About the artistJohab Silva is a native Brazilian who has lived and worked in Washington, DC since 2008. Over the past three years, Silva’s work has explored extended themes of appropriation, materiality, space and environmental issues. His research into these concepts includes a visit to the Brazilian rainforest, where he observed the direct confrontation between rapid human development and the environment.Silva’s most recent work includes video, sculpture, installation, painting and drawing. He has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Transformer Gallery, Cody Gallery, Miami Art Palace and the Santo Andre Museum of Art.
