Topgolf, the high-tech driving range, restaurant and lounge that got its start in Kingstowne before growing internationally, is opening a location near National Harbor.
The new location will be at Potomac Business Park in Prince George’s County, where Topgolf will build a new, larger venue off Oxon Hill Road.
That means the original Kingstowne location may not be around much longer, though local management has not confirmed or denied plans to close (or remain open).
Topgolf property owner 6625 South Van Dorn Street, LLC, has reportedly filed plans with the Fairfax County government to replace Topgolf Alexandria with townhomes, multifamily units and commercial space. The applications for rezoning and related changes have been “assigned” but no hearing dates have been set. (You can keep track of the applications here.)
In 2017, Adrienne Chance, Topgolf spokesperson, said the company had an agreement with the property owner that if another site was located in the region and rezoning of the original site was approved, the new site “could be a relocation of our Alexandria venue," according to Washington Business Journal. The same news outlet reported this week that the proposed mixed-use development would include restaurants with outdoor seating.
Topgolf’s Kingstowne location opened in August 2005 to much higher demand than the company originally anticipated. The 6625 S. Van Dorn Street was a driving range before Topgolf built its facility there, introducing residents to tech-driven driving range target practice and more. Topgolf is now operating in 28 states in addition to multiple international locations.
The Kingstowne facility is packed most nice evenings, with wait times for both tables and tees. However, newer Topgolf facilities are larger and accommodate more players with newer technology.
National Golf Day is April 25, and all local Topgolf outlets are offering free lessons. Learn more at topgolf.com/us/promo/national-golf-day-2018.
