Spirit, the Halloween pop-up shop that opens for just a few months in empty storefronts every fall, is coming to a couple of shopping centers in and around Alexandria.
There is a sign for a Spirit Halloween shop at the Rose Hill Plaza in the former Tuesday Morning store, though the shop is not listed on the Spirit website yet.
In addition, a Spirit Halloween store will open in the former CVS at Seven Corners.
The stores offer a wide variety of costumes from scary to funny for all ages. The stores also offer costumes for pets, candy, Halloween yard displays, inflatables, sound systems, animatronics, light projectors and seasonal home decor.
The stores typically open in early September in vacant storefronts, and operate through Halloween or a few days into early November.
The first Spirit Halloween pop-up store opened in the early 1980s in the Castro Valley shopping center in Alameda County, California. There were 60 pop-ups per year by the time founder Joe Maven sold the business in 1999. It is currently owned by Spencer Gifts and opens more than 1,400 stores per year for 60 to 90 days each.
