A new School of Rock is opening in Alexandria this spring.
The big sign is up outside of 3260 Duke St., across from Alexandria Commons shopping center. School of Rock has not announced its grand opening date or hours yet.
The unique music education school has programs for children and adults to learn a variety of instruments with a focus on rock music. Guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboard and vocal lessons in groups and individually are offered. Students are given the opportunity to perform at local rock venues and learn about the music industry.
Nearby locations include Vienna and Silver Spring. There are more than 100 locations nationwide and several international Schools of Rock, as well.
The Alexandria location is owned by Steve McKay, who spent his career as an IT project manager while playing drums and managing events on the side for more than 30 years.
According to McKay’s bio on the School of Rock website, “This lengthy span of performing in bands has given Steve immeasurable experience with band management, event management, promoting and marketing skills. One of Steve’s proudest moments in drumming occurred in high school jazz band. What should have been a brief drum solo during his high school holiday concert turned into a several-minute drum solo, which caused the auditorium full of students to cheer him on and school faculty to rush the stage. Apparently, Steve was the most popular guy in school after his extended drum solo.”
