Home decor retailer Pier 1 Imports is closing several hundreds stores, including several in the Alexandria area.
"In order to better align its business with the current operating environment, Pier 1 intends to reduce its store footprint by up to 450 locations," the company announced in an investor relations release.
The company has not released a complete list of closing stores, but there are store closing signs at the Pier 1 Imports retailers at Foxchase Shopping Center in Alexandria's West End and the Mount Vernon Plaza Shopping Center.
In addition, there are massive sales in progress at the Pier 1 Imports at Potomac Yard and Bailey's Crossroads.
Pier 1 Imports started in San Mateo, Calif., in the early 1960s. "Our first customers were post-World War II baby boomers looking for beanbag chairs, love beads and incense," according to the company's website.
