Parts of the West End of Alexandria could be nearly unrecognizable in the next decade as multiple development plans move forward.
The Greenhill South (known to some as Pickett Place) developer is seeking approval to reconstruct an area that is right now primarily warehouses, automotive uses and storage. A mix of residential, retail and offices are possibilities for the area.
Greenhill South is bordered by Edsall Road, South Van Dorn Street and Pickett Street. (La Mart has replaced Giant on the map below from the Greenhill company.)
The Greenhill Companies
The property area borders Backlick Run, and ecological restoration of the land around the run – including the beginnings of a multi-use path – are part of the plans.
There will be a community meeting on May 28 at 510F South Van Dorn St., one of the retail bays in the Greenhill South area where residents can ask questions and learn more specifics about the plans.
The plans will go to the City of Alexandria Planning Commission on June 25, with a request to rezone the area going before City Council on July 9.

Victory Center Property to Welcome New Residences
The City Council approved recently a subdivision of the land around 5001 Eisenhower Ave. (the Victory Center).
The eastern portion of the property is being rezoned to allow for commercial and residential mixed use.
The Victory Center building itself would remain in place, as would the parking lots to the west of the building.
The property owner, multi-family investment company Stonebridge, told City officials that they hope to have a preliminary plan come forward by the end of 2019.
Hotel, Residential Properties Proposed for Vulcan Site
City officials said Wednesday night that they have received a preliminary submission for a 200-room hotel on the front part of the Vulcan property near Edsall Road, with residences (townhomes and condos) on another portion of the 18-acre site.
City officials cautioned that the plans are very, very early in the process and could change significantly.
City officials are also looking closely at the Virginia Paving Co. property to assess how it fits into the West End’s development plans.
