The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is giving the go-ahead to an indoor ski resort in South County.
Alpine-X LLC, a holding company based in Virginia, submitted a proposal in late 2018 to redevelop a section of the I-95 Lorton CDD Landfill into an indoor ski facility, which will also include a hotel, restaurants and shops.
"Our mission is to develop unique mountain and snow sports destinations throughout North America while providing a safe, consistent, and memorable family entertainment experience," the Alpine-X mission statement says. The company says it strives to provide environmentally sustainable properties that have a positive effect on the surrounding communities.
The project proposal may also include the development of tubing, a gravity mountain coaster and a ropes course. The ski area will have multiple runs, including a bunny hill for beginners. The ski runs will slope at about 20 degrees, to comply with ski completion standards, according to the project proposal.
The approval by the Board will allow Alpine-X to conduct the necessary research to make sure the project is viable and does not guarantee it will happen. However, it if does, it could support 1,300 jobs at full capacity.
