Amazon Go
Amazon is bringing new grocery stores to the region.
Washington Business Journal first reported that Amazon is hiring managers for what appears to be an Amazon Go grocery store in the Alexandria area.
Amazon Go is a unique type of grocery store that requires shoppers to download an app to pay for their groceries. There are no cashiers.
Amazon describes the experience this way:
"Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Just Walk Out Technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Later, we’ll send you a receipt and charge your Amazon account. No lines, no checkout. (No, seriously.)"
The exact location of the new grocery store has not been disclosed by Amazon and conflicting reports are fueling rumors.
Progressive Grocer reported that the Amazon Go grocery store will take place of the shuttered Shoppers at the Festival at Manchester Lakes shopping center. However, the Washington Business Journal reported last year that the store would be split in three and turned into retail.
Current permits for electrical and fire work at 7005 Manchester Blvd., the closed Shoppers address, are issued to Mendel's Market, which some sources have disclosed is a code name for an Amazon project.
