7005 Manchester Blvd. in the Manchester Lakes Shopping Center will have a new grocery store in 2021.
Construction is moving ahead on a reported new Amazon Go grocery store at the Manchester Lakes shopping center in the Franconia area.
The grocery store will be taking the place of the Shoppers grocery store that closed. While construction crews on site are making progress, Amazon Go will not open until sometime in 2021.
Dozens of Fairfax County permits have been issued for Mendel's, a known code name for Amazon grocery initiatives.
Amazon describes the shopping experience this way:
"Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Just Walk Out Technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Later, we’ll send you a receipt and charge your Amazon account. No lines, no checkout. (No, seriously.)"
There are two additional retail spaces next to Amazon go. HomeSense, a home decor and furnishings store owned by the parent company of TJMaxx, is taking one of those spots. HomeSense has not announced an opening date yet.
News reports in late 2019 indicated that Sierra, an outdoor goods store also owned by TJX, would take the other retail space. However, construction has stopped a permits issued this year only mention an unnamed "future tenant." The Manchester Lakes shopping center website lists that retail space as "available."
