While many residents will remember 2024 as the year the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership almost pulled off the biggest development in Virginia state history, there were a lot of other successes.
AEDP hosted a reception earlier this week related to the release of the organization's Annual Report at The Muse, a condo building that will be opening multiple spaces for use by The Art League. The opening is one of the early steps in turning Old Town North into an arts district.
The Art League will be using the space for a photography studio (with a dark room), a stained glass studio, gallery and event space at 1200 N. Royal St. In addition, a unique partnership facilitated in part by AEDP and the Industrial Development Authority is allowing The Art League to convert an empty warehouse into a new, permanent home just a few blocks north of The Muse on Slaters Lane.
In addition, it has turned out that the attention from the possibility of attracting the Capitals and Wizards professional sports teams to Alexandria has resulted in multiple inquiries of interest from other companies — not just for Potomac Yard, but for all parts of the city.
"In a failure, we had some big wins," said Mayor Justin Wilson.
In the past two years, AEDP has played pivotal roles in opening the new Metro station at Potomac Yard, bringing the headquarters for Five Guys to the Carlyle neighborhood. The organization also launched a new Small Business Support Program and started a new Open Rewards program that rewards residents and visitors for shopping at local small businesses.
