Saturday night, more than 100 residents dressed in period costume brought the Lee-Fendall House to life for Sips & Secrets: A Speakeasy Night.
The evening included 1920s-style drinks, jazz and ragtime, a Charleston contest and costume contest .
The sold-out event raised more than $13,000 to help the historic home's structure — the building's original stone, brick and mud foundation is in need of serious repair. The home, at the corner of North Washington and Oronoco streets in Old Town Alexandria, has stood for more than 230 years. The money raised by Sips & Secrets will allow foundation repairs to move forward.
The event commemorated the Lee-Fendall House’s Prohibition-era history. Members of the Downham family, who once lived in the home, were prominent Alexandria liquor dealers before Prohibition.
