Thousands of Alexandria residents and visitors to the city enjoyed the annual George Washington Birthday Parade Monday under sunny skies.
Parade participants marched a one-mile route through the streets of Old Town Alexandria starting from the intersection of South Fairfax Street and Gibbon Street, ending the parade passing a reviewing stand of Alexandria dignitaries including Mayor Justin Wilson.
The city celebrates the General’s birthday (he would have been 287 years old this week) throughout the month of February with more than 15 festive events, including the George Washington Birthday Parade, a Cherry Challenge among Alexandria’s restaurants, free admission to historic sites, popular walking tours and an 18th-century banquet and ball.
More than 140 locations in present-day Alexandria are associated with the nation’s first president who conducted business, gathered with friends, worshiped and even owned a townhouse in the city.
