The grand opening of "Mirror Mirror" is set for March 30 at the new Waterfront Park at the foot of King Street.
This week, a number of professionals are at work installing the semi-permanent interactive sculpture in the new park. “Mirror Mirror” will respond to sound with light as people walk through the art installation that features mirrors and LED lights.
The Saturday, March 30 grand opening is from 2 - 9 p.m.
“Mirror Mirror” was created SOFTlab, a New York-based design studio. The lead artist is Michael Szivos.
The piece was inspired by the historic lighthouse at Jones Point. According to notes from Szivos, “For Mirror Mirror we were inspired by the architecture of the lighthouse and how it uses a lenticular lens to cast light, panoramically connecting land and sea,” 88DesignBox reported.
“Mirror Mirror” is the first piece of art commissioned for Site/See: New Views in Old Town, an annual series of temporary public art installations. The goal of Site/See is to draw in visitors and encourage interaction. Alexandria plans special programs and performances in and around the 2019 piece as part of the ongoing Portside in Old Town initiative.
“Mirror Mirror” will be at the new waterfront park space through November this year.
