The DC metro area, including Alexandria, has taken the top spots on two national lists this week.
The region was named the no. 1 “Most Accessible” by Redfin for people with disabilities. “With wide sidewalks that are easy to navigate, ample access to high-quality healthcare and a number of ADA-compliant attractions, parks and businesses, this metro area has earned the #1 spot on this list,” according to Redfin.
The list was created just prior to Global Accessibility Awareness Day (the third Thursday of each May). The Social Security Administration estimates that up to 20 percent of Americans are living with a disability.
Other cities in the top 5 on the accessibility list were Salt Lake City, Tampa, Portland and Tucson.
Separately, the region was named the top summer travel destination by WalletHub. The organization compared the 100 most populated metro areas across six categories: travel costs and hassles, local costs, attractions, weather, activities and safety. The DC region fared well on attractions, activities and safety as well as ease of travel — the weather and costs left something to be desired.
Rounding out the top 5 metropolitan areas on the WalletHub list were Orlando, Austin, Chicago and Atlanta.
